Article
In the introductory chapter of my 3rd book of The China Trilogy, The BIG Red Book on China (https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B00TX0TDDI/allbooks), I juxtaposed a picture of China’s first recognized imperial emperor, Cheng Tang of the Shang Dynasty, going back 3,500, years (1675 to 1646 BCE), next to Karl Marx, the father of modern day communism, what I would call political economic communism. I went on to explain that in fact China has been communist for 5,000 years. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Karl Marx was influenced by Chinese philosophy.
When Confucius came along in the 6th century BC, he did not just pop his ideas out of his head like popcorn, He had been influenced by, at that time, 2,000 years of Chinese communism, communistic living, socialistic living, socialistic cooperation, community cooperation, working together, community businesses and agriculture, community manufacturing, people powered economies. Therefore, his ideas were obviously informed and inspired by what happened in China before he was born, and that was communism in the social, economic, cultural sense.
Lao Zi (which means Old Child), wrote The Dao, lived at the same time as Confucius, in fact, they met once before Lao Zi rode off on his donkey into the mountains and was never heard from again. He too was obviously influenced by what happened in China during the 2,000 previous years, and his ideas are also very communistic.
Buddha, amazingly also lived in the 6th century BC (introduced in China in the first century AD). I wouldn’t be surprised if he had heard about Chinese philosophy and its communistic philosophy, because Buddhism is also very communistic. Given their so many commonalities, I wouldn’t be surprised if Buddha knew of Confucius and Lao Zi, and vice-versa.
Today, I read an article by a journalist at the South China Morning Post, a Chinese lady, who talks about how Xi Jinping is trying to combine Marxism with Confucianism. I can only gather she has never traveled to the Mainland. In this very snarky article, she suggests that the Chinese don’t know much about and may not accept Confucianism. It’s extremely condescending and arrogant, coming from this Hong Kong person.
Why? Confucius, Lao Zi, and Buddha have been around China for 1000s of years, they have never gone away and they have never left Chinese consciousness. We have been in Shenzhen for the last two weeks and the temples are full of people. There are Confucius temples, there are Daoist temples and there are Buddhist temples everywhere.
The thousand-armed Buddha of compassion, named Avaloketishvara, in the Guangdong Province, Panyu Lotus Mountain Tourist Area, about 1.5 hours northeast of Shenzhen. The altars were busy with Chinese praying and offering incense, gifts and donations.
The largest gilded Guanyin Goddess statue in the world, 41m tall, 120 tons of bronze with nine kilograms of gold to cover her. Guanyin is Confucism-Daoism-Buddhism’s patron female saint of compassion. Built in the 1600s, she is overlooking the mighty Pearl River. People are praying. At her base she is surrounded by many believers’ offerings of flowers, fruit and food and it was only mid-morning.
The hand of Buddha outside the Guangdong Province, Meizhou Lingguang Temple. It was started in the Tang Dynasty, 600-900AD. the name of Buddha (佛 = Fo) is in the background. Everywhere we turn in China, we see Confucism-Daoism-Buddhism, vibrant and popular.
For 27 years, 1949-1976, the people were asked to put Confucius, Lao Zi and Buddha on the bookshelf, to build a new China and a new society, to put away old ideas, old customs, old rituals and old beliefs to create a new Chinese people, who could be independent, free thinking, self-reliant, not having to rely on old ideas – and it worked. You can see what’s going on in China today. It is the world leader economically, militarily, technologically, infrastructurally, and it is the most consensual and people powered democracy on earth.
During the time of the Mao Era, people did not get rid of Confucius, Lao Zi and Buddha. They could continue to say their prayers to these three icons of Asian civilization, which today are fused together in one holistic whole, basically recognized as “Chinese religion”. Temples are often very syncretic, with icons of all three beliefs.
However, post-1949, publicly, the people were asked to create a new China, a new Chinese people, and it was an unbelievable success. China has gone from strength to strength since communist liberation in 1949, and they’re not looking back. They’re already in the 22nd century, and much of the rest of the world has pretty much fallen apart, except for Russia, DPRK, Iran and all the other communist, socialist, anti-imperialist countries that the West is ceaselessly attacking and trying to destroy.
A good parallel is when a child is challenged to no longer carry their teddy bear everywhere as security, to learn to be independent and self-reliant. They may still hide it under their bed for hugs of reassurance, but they’ve learned to take a step towards growing up. That was China 1949-1976.
Today, we can say that the Chinese follow Confucism-Daoism-Buddhism-Communism-Socialism!
Here is this Hong Kong journalist’s article (https://www.scmp.com/news/china/politics/article/3290159/mixing-marx-confucius-heart-matter-china). It’s quite interesting. Be that as it may, her suggesting that the Chinese don’t know anything about Confucius and may be reluctant to accept it is absolutely, hysterically awful and very insulting to the Chinese people.

…great article Jeff, very well put together and thought provoking…it’s so obvious that the West is in frightening decline, while even more sinister prospects promise to possibly soon unfold,in which context your article is timely with it’s glimmers of optimism shining through the cracks that ominously threaten and soon may shatter the West’s illusions…
Thanks for your valuable comments, Gerry. The West, more than any other civilization, lives in a simulacrum of supposed democracy and freedom. Yet, it is the most totalitarian place on earth.
Best, Jeff
Interesting article. Thank you. Are you sure that sculpture is “the hand of Buddha?” That is how an Orthodox priest positions his fingers in order to make the sign of the cross over people.
Interesting observation, Fr. Bell. I did not know that.
East and West have been communicating along Silk Roads for millennia, before the birth of Christ, thus cross-pollination is possible.
The Buddhist temple in Meizhou is from the Tang Dynasty, 600-900AD and has been continually built and updated since then.
Who knows?
Merry Christmas and crossing over, Happy New Year of the Snake 2025!
Best, Jeff
