Pictured above: the mosque in our former Beijing neighborhood, with its prominent, onion-shaped dome, so commonly seen in the Middle East. If it’s changed in the last two years, that will help determine how much the government intends to standardize the look of China’s Muslim houses of worship.

This article in the South China Morning Post immediately caught my eye. It’s title, (A) Chinese Hui Muslim protest forces authorities to halt plan to demolish Weizhou Grand Mosque suggests that a serious confrontation between the local community and Baba Beijing is bubbling up (https://www.scmp.com/news/china/policies-politics/article/2159047/chinese-hui-muslims-rally-protect-weizhou-grand-mosque).
You wouldn’t know that the South China Morning Post is owned by China’s Alibaba. Its CEO and founder Jack Ma, who is a self-professed communist-capitalist (http://chinarising.puntopress.com/2017/12/07/jack-ma-is-a-communist-capitalist-jesus-was-a-communist-socialist-china-rising-radio-sinoland-171207/), promised not to change its editorial content and it is obvious that this is true, as many of the journalists still there are Cold War, red baiting, self-loathing Sinophobes, who are no better than racist NYT, Washington Post, CNN, BBC, Fox et al. Recent headlines are meant to instill fear or shock, like, Is China’s atheist Communist Party trying to eradicate Islam? (https://www.scmp.com/news/china/policies-politics/article/2155428/chinas-atheist-communist-party-trying-eradicate-islam) and, How China is trying to impose Islam with Chinese characteristics in the Hui Muslim heartland (https://www.scmp.com/news/china/policies-politics/article/2145939/how-china-trying-impose-islam-chinese-characteristics). This last article has a menacing hyperlink shouting, Making Islam invisible on the streets of China.
Then, articles began to appear that the evil commies were shutting down Islamic religious schools for children this summer (https://www.scmp.com/news/china/policies-politics/article/2155428/chinas-atheist-communist-party-trying-eradicate-islam). Can’t stop there, so more articles began to flood Western MSM that Baba Beijing was rounding up not hundreds, not thousands, but up to one million (sic) Muslims in Xinjiang Province and forcing them into reeducation detention camps.
In this current cycle of Big Lie Propaganda hysteria, the Sinophobes had to throw a dog bone to the Jesus freaks, with scare articles entitled, Christian heartland on front lines of China’s campaign of suppression (https://www.scmp.com/news/china/policies-politics/article/2158691/christian-heartland-front-lines-chinas-campaign) and, Replace pictures of Jesus with Xi to escape poverty Chinese villagers urged (https://www.scmp.com/news/china/policies-politics/article/2119699/praise-xi-jinping-not-jesus-escape-poverty-christian). No Western anti-China smear campaign is complete these days without denigrating China’s very popular (both at home and outside Eurangloland) President Xi Jinping.
Western journalists don’t want to inform and contextualize, so that you really understand how geopolitics and other countries work, past, present and future. They owe their allegiance not the truth, but to their CIA minders to convince you that the Yellow Peril and Red Menace, which never existed in the first place, are right outside your bedroom window, cunningly planning their onslaught to destroy your cherished way of life (http://chinarising.puntopress.com/2018/01/06/slavs-and-the-yellow-peril-are-niggers-brutes-and-beasts-in-the-eyes-of-western-empire-china-rising-radio-sinoland/).
This reminds me of a couple of years ago, when in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, certain churches were told take down the crosses on their edifices. Not all of them, just some. The West’s Big Lie Propaganda Machine went into high gear, with Page One exposure around the world, giving the impression that churches were being bulldozed en masse by China’s officially atheist government, while claiming that Chinese Christians were being persecuted and harassed.
Here’s the contextualization that everybody else ignores.
The Constitutions of China and its Communist Party openly write about defending the nation against foreign influence, sabotage, imperialism and capitalism, in order to protect Marxism, Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought and Deng Xiaoping Theory. These sociopolitical bedrocks guarantee the safety and wellbeing of the country’s borders, its people, communism and socialism with Chinese characteristics, all of which is China’s post-1949 version of the millennial Heavenly Mandate (http://chinarising.puntopress.com/2017/05/13/so-called-communist-china-by-jeff-j-brown-in-the-all-china-review/).
In other words, Baba Beijing tells its citizens to accept the fact that they are going to be sabotaged and infiltrated by Western empire and it promises to protect their communist-socialist Chinese civilization and way of life and keep it intact. To admit that foreign elements have already penetrated the country and are already on the inside, so to speak, would be an admission of failure on the government’s part, so the leaders can’t do that. That would be a perceived loss of face.
So, what do they do? They’ve got the proof that certain churches and mosques are taking money from outside sources that have probably not been properly approved by China’s very thorough NGO Control Law (http://chinarising.puntopress.com/2016/04/30/baba-beijing-lowers-the-communist-boom-on-foreign-ngos-china-rising-radio-sinoland-16-4-30/). Not only are these international sources of money and influence breaking Chinese law, but the local places of worship are equally guilty. So, as an elliptical message of punishment to the guilty local entities, they symbolically tell them to remove church spires and mosque domes. This, while behind the scenes Baba Beijing cuts off the funding, visas, bank accounts and other channels that the foreign infiltrators were using.
All the other churches and mosques know what’s going on, take note and Baba Beijing saves face by not having to admit that Western imperialists got the best of them in the first place. I can promise you that if any Buddhist temples were caught taking funding outside the NGO Control Law, something similar would happen: maybe the board of directors might get replaced or monks might be sent home for a time, reducing the temple’s income flows, to make the guilty leaders feel the pain, and then slowly let the members come back and get to work, while back channel cutting off the illegal funding.
It’s only human nature for governments to pass a law and everybody says to themselves, WHEW, well, that takes care of that problem!, assuming the good citizens are going to respect it. As it turns outs, most do, but not all, and that window of complacency is often exploited. I think this is partly to explain for Baba Beijing getting caught off guard, as the NGO Control Law was passed about 2.5 years ago.
As far as Baba Beijing wanting to make China’s mosques look more Chinese and less Middle Eastern, this is a common theme around the world, to keep national architecture in harmony with historical precedence and traditions. Try building whatever kind of house or business you want in countries across Europe and in historical cities and regions across the planet and you get handed a book of guidelines, restrictions and “no-can-do’s” as thick as the Bible or the Koran.
We had a friend in Normandy, France who spent many months getting approval to install ceiling to wall windows on the sunny side of his house, and the only reason they approved it was that the place was way off the beaten track and could not be seen from any public road. But, he still had to fight like hell for the permit. Try getting a renovation permit in many historical cities and regions around the world and you have to follow very exacting form-and-function regulations.
So, the aforementioned mosque that is being asked to remove some of its domes could be like those churches in Wenzhou, meaning they got caught taking international funds illegally. The next time I go back to our old Beijing neighborhood, I will check on the Hui Muslim mosque that is only a block and half from our former apartment. If the beautiful, sky blue, onion-shaped dome has been replaced with something more Chinese, then this would suggest that the government is setting architectural standards for mosques.
But, I doubt it. Xinjiang Province alone has over 24,000 mosques, the total in the top ten Muslim populated provinces is over 36,000 (http://www.360doc.com/content/14/0316/11/11971456_360980940.shtml) and nationally, there are over 39,000 Muslim places of worship (http://www.360doc.com/content/17/0411/19/15189412_644740159.shtml). So much for Islam being repressed in China! Thus, I have a hard time imagining Baba Beijing would ask almost 40,000 mosques across the country to remodel. Architectural regulations may be passed, but surely there will be grandfather clauses for existing structures.
So, you read it here: individual places of worship are being selectively and obliquely punished for taking money from questionable international sources.
Then, you may want to say, Well, what’s wrong with that, Jeff?, then you need to read The China Trilogy ( http://chinarising.puntopress.com/2017/05/19/the-china-trilogy/), where years of research and book writing amply prove that Christian churches fully supported Western colonialism’s war, genocide, human exploitation, resource extraction and the opium addiction of one-fourth of the country’s people, until communist liberation in 1949. Baba Beijing has centuries of historical proof to not give any religious organization the freedom to do whatever it wants, be it Muslim, Christian or Buddhist. All religions have enough subversive elements to need regulation and oversight, especially in a communist-socialist country like China, for which Western empire spends billions every year trying to overthrow it.
As for the Islamic summer schools being closed down, again, Western propaganda selectively censors and cherry picks information to shock and anger the hell out of you.
Remembering that there are about 25,000,000 Muslims in China, making it a bigger Muslim country than many other officially Islamic ones, these closures are happening in Linxia Hui (Muslim Minority) Autonomous Prefecture, in Gansu Province. Linxia has 280,000 inhabitants out of a total of 26,000,000 Gansu Province citizens. That’s about 1% of the country’s Muslim population and the same percentage of Gansu’s total. One percent.
Yet, to read Western headlines, the CIA media wants you to think that religious persecution is a national crime against humanity being perpetrated across China, a veritable ethic holocaust.
What’s really going on? Obviously, in this one small prefecture in Gansu, Baba Beijing got intelligence that some religious schools there were infected from less than honorable international connections, likely Saudi Wahhabi types, who are paid by Western NGOs, Departments of State, Ministries of Foreign Affairs and the CIA-MI6-DGSE-BND complex to foment subversion in enemy countries like China.
So, we’re back to Baba Beijing not wanting to admit the country has been infiltrated, thereby causing a loss of face for maintaining the post-1949 Heavenly Mandate. Thus, the government is temporarily closing the handful of affected schools, until they rid them of their sabotaging influences.
Gansu and Ningxia are spectacular in natural and cultural beauty. Sitting at the intersection of the ancient Silk Roads and China’s millennial Buddhism and Islam, I traveled there, while writing the first book of The China Trilogy, 44 Days (https://ganxy.com/i/88276/). Ningxia is majority Hui Muslim. In Gansu, Muslims and Buddhists live side-by-side in peace, with mosque minarets and temple stupas standing next to each other, against a backdrop of stunning deserts, breathtaking valleys and 6,000-meter, snow crested mountains. The whole area heavily depends on tourism for revenue.
What earthly good would it serve these regions for the government to go around persecuting one religion and not the other? It would do exactly what Baba Beijing is trying to avoid: create social disharmony, economic instability and foreign subterfuge. It is exactly what the West spends billions trying to make happen.
But clearly, the most outrageous claims are that up to one million Muslims in Xinjiang Province have been locked up in reeducation detention centers. Detention centers are a fact of life in every society, from halfway houses, drug rehabs to juvenile correctional centers. China has them too, including for religious extremism. The American ones are called Guantanamo Prison and all the secret CIA torture centers hidden around the globe.
Baba Beijing knows what it is doing, since China’s recidivism rate for all crimes is a world record 7-8%, while in the United States it is ten times that much. This is to assure that its massive prison industry keeps raking in billions in criminal, inhumane profits, destroying the lives of millions of mostly poor and colored (now) non-citizens, who are trapped in the world’s largest penal colony.
Maitreya Bhakal had a Twitter exchange with the Financial Times’ journalist, Emily Z. Feng, who is claiming that 80% of adults in Southern Xinjiang have been rounded up (https://blog.hiddenharmonies.org/about/). Really? Eighty percent? Who’s feeding the children, teaching classes, opening businesses, tending the animal flocks and weeding the crops? Ms. Feng, an obvious CIA ventriloquist dummy in the Big Lie propaganda machine, has written numerous reports about this subject (https://twitter.com/EmilyZFeng/status/1026251556084170755 ).
Has Ms. Feng gone there to see for herself? Even if she did, she offers no sources, except to say that she talked to people in the region. Who? Members of the West’s many seditious NGOs, funded by the CIA’s National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and George Soros’ Orwellian-named Open Society Foundation (http://landdestroyer.blogspot.com/2015/11/chinas-xinjiang-problem-made-in-usa.html), all calling Xinjiang “the militarily occupied country of East Turkistan”, replete with ersatz, sky blue “national” flag?
It’s not just MSM outlets. Supposedly “liberal”, “independent” and “alternative” venues are just as infested with deep state editors and reporters. Leave it to Zero Hedge to claim that satellite photos prove China is supposedly building untold numbers of internment camps to warehouse Muslims en masse (https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-08-19/satellite-images-show-expanding-internment-camps-chinese-muslims-xinjiang-region).
Yeah, just like those satellite images of Iraq’s nonexistent chemical weapon factories, Westerners will swallow any doctored or fabricated images of everything that confirms their brainwashed views of all those Dreaded Other, dark-skinned commies and socialists around the world. You know the ones I’m talking about. They are my Chinese neighbors, friends and colleagues, and it’s obvious to Euranglolanders that they are foaming at the mouth to destroy Westerners’ Potemkin “freedom and democracy”.
The Financial Times, along with the Economist, New York Times, Washington Post, Guardian and thousands of other MSM print-AV outlets, like BBC, and CNN, are propaganda mouthpieces for the deep state, peddling outrageous lie upon lie against any world leader or country that has the courage to not be a splay-legged whore for Western capitalism. How many times have I heard people say,
Oh, he’s really well informed. He religiously reads the [fill in the blank] Economist – Financial Times – New York Times – Washington Post – et cetera.
He might as well have Linda Blair’s possessed demon child in The Exorcist pump his face full of propaganda projectile vomit every time he turns one of those pages, to read about Western empire’s long list of enemies.
Yet, 99% of Westerners will hear all this Western Big Lie pig swill and believe that evil communists in China have locked up 80% of the country’s Muslims in concentration camps, never to see the light of day again. Surely the CIA’s media empire will come out with news that Xi Jinping is personally overseeing the construction of gas chambers disguised as mosques. Why not, since Eurangloland’s brainwashed citizens will swallow it all, hook, line and sinker, as gospel truth from their mythical “free press”.
This is the same CIA propaganda script played over and over again, like stuck video player. Every year during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, as well as during religious celebrations, such as Eid Al-Adha, Western MSM takes marching orders from their elite owners, cranking out salacious lies that marauding hordes of soulless, zombie commies are running around the Chinese countryside, with mossy fangs and blood-soaked claws, forcing Muslims to sell and drink alcohol, holding them down and stuffing pork in their mouths, making them not fast during Ramadan, stopping them from praying and going to the mosque, ad nauseam. Anybody with a wit of intelligence asks, cui bono, who benefits? The answer is nobody and it’s all a mountain of mendacious, racist, Western horse manure, meant to stir fear of the incredibly successful, anti-capitalist Communist Party of China (CPC) and to engender hatred of Chinese people around the world.
Russians, Muslims, Iranians, Cubans, Venezuelans, Latinos, North Koreans, Orthodox Christians, Africans, Eritreans, socialists, communists – the list is long, very long – and they all get the same, tired, but amazingly effective playbook to control global perceptions about capitalism’s many enemies. It has been destroying the world like clockwork, so why change it?
The Western Big Lie propaganda machine will keep up its steady stream of acid dripping on China’s reality, because it works every time. I bet if you asked Euranglolanders and imperial door mat citizens, like the Japanese and South Koreans, that the majority of those polled would agree with the South China Morning Post and FT’s Emily Z. Feng, because that is all they’ve heard and want to hear.
In closing, here is Baba Beijing’s viewpoint of the West’s endless Big Lie Propaganda Machine (http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/1116798.shtml). The key passage states:
In terms of China’s Xinjiang policies, social stability and cohesion of the region are the top priorities of the central government. The peace and stability that Xinjiang and its people are now enjoying should be attributed to regulations of high intensity, and this is a phase that this northwestern region has to go through before normal governance can be enacted.
In other words, the West is relentlessly trying to overthrow Baba Beijing, the leaders know it and they are honor bound to maintain China’s 5,000-year old Heavenly Mandate. One-billion-four-hundred million Chinese citizens expect nothing less. Always have, always will.
Postscript: here is a short article from the Chinese English-language press that openly talks about what this article discusses, namely “overseas interference” and “denying local governments are cracking down on crosses, as reported in overseas media” (http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/1117567.shtml).
PS #2: here is a article confirming that the UN never published a report that one million Chinese were locked up in concentration camps. But, you’d never know that behind the Great Western Firewall. The damage has already been done (https://grayzoneproject.com/2018/08/23/un-did-not-report-china-internment-camps-uighur-muslims/amp/).
More proof that the West is working overtime to sabotage Xinjiang:

Zero Hedge is a fake woke lolbertarian publisher. It has shamelessly disseminated neoliberal propaganda when it comes to American domestic politics.
I agree with permitting people the right to have or not have religious beliefs, but they should also respect the norms for ensuring legality, political stability and healthy social relations for any country they live in. ‘Murika could use rehabilitation for its own Christian fundamentalists and alt-right or other extremists.
Zerohedge is rather all over the place, but this is a great, timely, necessary article.
Which idea is more plausible: that Westerners actually care about Muslims, or that Westerners are worried that China is onto the Salafist infiltrators they are funding? Obviously, it’s the latter. Add in the usual anti-China angle and that explains the Western faux-outrage.
But what’s great is how you explain the CCP’s angle – it’s very logical, plausible and democratic.
Making Muslim churches more “local” is the same thing in France – I think there are two mosques which have been permitted minarets in the Paris area? Local Muslims are fine with it – though of course they’d prefer to have minarets…but they just want more mosques so they don’t have to pray in the streets in the winter.
@maitreya bhakal’s stupid twitter argument
The article he quoted or had a problem with said “up to 80 per cent of adults in urban neighbourhoods have been rounded up according to remaining residents.”
And the author clarified she is obviously not saying that for the entire province. How stupid/ biased one has to be to misinterpret that and then someone even worse to quote that twitter argument.
