Wonderful to have Douglas on the show today. By chance, this is the second interview I’ve had with guests sharing lifelong experiences among First Nation peoples, first with Jerome Irwin (

Douglas F Jack has worked in multiple disciplines, learned in multiple advanced apprenticeships & has had the good fortune of excellent mentors, as life itself abundantly provides in following the ‘spirit’ (‘breath’).

For 59 years of his 69 years Doug has participated-in, lived-in & worked with 1st Nation & indigenous peoples worldwide. ‘Do-we-know-who-we-are-?’ is a community economy web-based software with Cataloguing, Mapping, Accounting & Communication formats for aiding local Multihome animists to organize, connect & empower local talents, goods, services, resources & dreams in local livelihood.

Here is Douglas’ extensive website,

Enjoy a fascinating discussion!

EXTENDED PRESS BIO: Douglas Jack is involved for 59 years in ‘Indigenous’ (Latin ’self-generating’) & First Nation solidarity projects, living, working & collaborating in supporting 1st Nation sovereignty, livelihood & legal authority in Quebec such as James-Bay over territorial livelihood rights on the La-Grande river 1968. In Canada such as the right of government Cabinet ministerial representation 1963. In 1968 summer at a summer camp, I worked as business-manager assistant in accounting. At my High-School I wrote on Student-led ‘education’ (L ’educare’ = ’to-lead-forth-from-within’) helped organize a student union, rewrite the Student-Council   constitution, made principal & School-Board presentation & proposal for an apprenticeship program. For indigenous Turtle-Island US sovereignty & such as the United Farm Worker union Chicano right to organize in such as the California Grape Boycott 1968, I helped with the Montreal California Grape Boycott committee & communications. I bicycled through California, Oregon, Washington & British Columbia growing regions 1974-5 to meet workers & residents & understand the diverse biospheres. In 1971, While attending the 4 month Sorrento Centre Winter-course in Community, Communications & Group-Dynamics (accredited with Simon-Fraser University) I visited the Kamloops Indian Residential School & was given a 3 day orientation to 1st Nation organization across Turtle-Island & the Residential School abuses & death involved by Ernie Crey author with Suzanne Fournier of ‘Stolen from our Embrace’. With a background in doctoral Structural-geological mapping research I helped establish the BC Uranium exploration & mining Moratorium 1982, then Quebec Uranium Moratorium 2014. After 3 years of grooming in Structural Geological Mapping, both I & my last Queen’s University doctoral student abandoned the geological field due to our resource assessment that there are more finer quality ores in city materials & garbage streams tha there are in the beautiful mountain biospheres, which we were mapping with the Canadian & US Geological Surveys. I’ve hitchhiked & bicycled some 150,000 kilometres across Turtle-Island. I lived among Russian Doukhobor, German Mennonite, English Quaker & American pacifist communities 1971-80. I helped organize the British Columbia Fed-up Natural Food Cooperative Network in my West-Kootenay region. As our co-ops failed BC animators studied indigenous-economy time-based equivalency accounting on the String-shell & governance implications in the participatory progressive-ownership of the Production-Society-Guilds. I sewed, built, canoed with, travelled with & lived in a traditional Sioux tipi in 1973-4 with a 1st Nation Secwepemc friend. I helped organize the Celgar Pulp-mill Pollution Control committee as responsible Officer for citizens & union in 1975, then a Multistakeholder ‘Participatory’ (L ‘part’ = ’share’) investment, ownership & Board-of-directors representation adopted by the Canadian Cellulose corporation eventually in other mills across BC. We organized in tandem with the 1st Nation inspired   participatory Tembec Forest Product mill in Temiscaming Quebec (visited 1979). Like about 70% of Turtle-Island (N. America) inhabitants today I have 1st Nation blood. 85% of 1st Nations have blood from around the world, so we are one biosphere-based people. In my case Mohawk from the Albany-Troy, upstate New-York region intermarried with Dewitt New Netherlander Dutch following that 1650 invasion. I was raised in suburban Montreal without knowledge of my 1st Nation roots, so did not receive the deep cultural knowledge. I was raised since infancy with apprenticeship to my father in building & mechanical design, building, tools. We repaired, restored & built engines, machines & every-kind of household article, electricity, plumbing, built & repaired a dozen homes.  I was raised in our family with formal equal-time debating on a regular basis around the dining-room table, so as to become familiar with, ability & innovation to implement ‘dialectic’ (‘both-sided’) processes of dialogue in my work. Marshall McLuhan, first through Jerry Rubin & Abby Hoffman, is a major influence on my thinking, communications & animation work since 1968.

To add to the Bio. I have a daughter Liv since her birth in 1985 & a son Adrian since 2000, both born with the assistance of midwives. I live adjacent to 3 other extended family households in  a Multihome development. My son & his fiance live with me. I’ve helped build many innovative buildings such as a Geodesic Yurt style Pottery studio 1971, Geodesic Dome, Vallican Whole Community centre 1973 & a dozen other buildings. I’m involved in Organic Orcharding & gardening since 1971 with an emphasis on ‘indigenous’ Polyculture-Orchard multi-level food production. I’ve worked on innovative research & design projects funded by the Canadian Mortgage & Housing Corporation. In 1973 an elder Doukhobor friend George Podmorov who arrived in Canada in 1899 as a 5 year old, suggested to me that the ‘Anabaptist’ (‘Ana’ from Latin ‘upright’ or those who consciously & freely choose their own religious beliefs as adults) Doukhobor, Mennonite & Quaker had lost the cultural peace context of their mission, upon leaving the cities of Russia, Germany & England. George suggested to me that the most important peace & ecology work is at the source of human relations in the cities & perhaps that my own roots in Montreal would be of importance to me & the world. This reflection ‘knocked my socks off’, & I did end up moving back to Montreal in 1980. In Montreal I helped operate the Quebec province wide (also some of Ontario & New-Brunswick) La-Balance Natural Food Co-op network, helped invent a 5 food gravity fed dispenser used across Quebec in 7 stores. I’ve volunteered worked as a Specialized Educator advocating for integrated family & community living for people labelled as ‘Intellectually-Handicapped’ since 1978 in BC then in Quebec. Since 1979, I adopt a Vow of Solidarity to live & spend money & time only on essential food, shelter, clothing, warmth & health as a personal guide to personal & collective peace & harmony. In 1994 I helped organize the Sustainable Development Association & contributed to its journal ‘Green Design’ In 1995-2000, I coordinated the SDA & McGill Unversity School of Urban Planning Eco-Montreal Tiohtiake Green Map (Geographic Information System) of the greater Montreal region. in conjunction with our early participation with the Green Map System, as its first GIS map & Canada’s 1st Green Map. In 1999 in collaboration with 36 Mohawk elders from the Kahnawake & Kanehsatake Onkwawen:na Language Centre & McGill Geography, we researched, identified, wrote & published Tsi Tetsionitiotiakon Sustainability Rooted in Heritage mapping of 105 Mohawk, Wendat & Algonquian placenames now used as teaching material in Montreal universities. Influenced by First Nation elders, I’ve adopted the worldwide indigenous base strategy of the ~100 (50-150) person Multihome-Dwelling-Complex (eg. Longhouse-apartment, Pueblo-townhouse & Kanata-village) ‘economic’ (Greek ‘oikos’ = ‘home’ + ’namein’ = ‘care-&-nurture’) organizing strategy of the ‘Great-good-way-of-kindness aka Great-Law-of-Peace’ aka ‘Constitution’. 70% of people today live in Multihomes in an average of 32 dwelling-units or ~100 people. 20% of Multihome-dwellers are extended families living intentionally in proximity for social & economic collaboration. The website’s various sections are used as teaching material in universities & by governments worldwide, consulted daily by an average of 8.5 visits amounting now over 12 years to 30,300 different people visiting 38,480 times reading over 61,000 page-sections from 184 different countries. USA is ~34% of visits, Canada 30% & worldwide(not US & Can) about 35% read in ~50 different languages.
