I am truly honored to have Russell Bentley on the show today and would like to thank our mutual friend, Eric Arnow, for putting us in touch.
Here is his first-person bio:
I came to Donetsk in December 2014, to fight fascism and to help the people of Donbass. I served a year in the Novorussian Armed Forces, in VOSTOK Battalion, HAN Battalion Spetsnaz and DPR MVD Military Police. In 2015, I began making videos and doing human aid work, and have continued to this day. I have written a book about my time in combat called “Donbass Cowboy” and am currently working on a second book about my life before I came to Donbass. I am married to a local schoolteacher and am a citizen of the Donetsk People’s Republic. I love Donbass, it is my home and I plan to live here for the rest of my life.
I just finished reading Russell’s excellent, real-life war journal book, “Donbass Cowboy”, which, even being a pacifist, I found gripping, honest, funny and entertaining. I took copious notes, which became the basis of all the questions I’m dying to ask him today.
I strongly recommend reading “Donbass Cowboy”. It’s not expensive, but if money is an issue, ask your local library, school, university or place of worship to buy it, so others can share and learn. Institutions like these LOVE it when their members make purchase requests. It makes them feel like their work is valued.
